Die Mittagsfrau (The Blind Side of the Heart) is a critically acclaimed novel by German author Julia Franck, published in 2007. The novel tells the harrowing story of Helene, a young woman living through the tumultuous times of early 20th-century Germany, including both World Wars. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing society, the novel explores themes of loss, abandonment, identity, and the impact of history on personal lives.

The narrative is deeply emotional and complex, centered around a shocking act by Helene—abandoning her young son at a train station—which serves as the novel's starting point. From there, the story unfolds in flashbacks, delving into Helene's past, her family's tragedies, and the experiences that led her to such a desperate decision.

Julia Franck's writing is marked by its lyrical prose and psychological depth, making Die Mittagsfrau not just a historical novel, but also a profound exploration of human resilience and the ways in which individuals cope with trauma and loss. The novel won the prestigious German Book Prize (Deutscher Buchpreis) in 2007, solidifying Franck's reputation as a leading voice in contemporary German literature.
